Get Smart… the Polish Way

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at a Joe Polish Platinum Event. It was a great experience and the crowd of really smart marketers loved my Outrageous Marketing. That’s all great, but that’s not what I want to tell you about today.

I want to tell you about the rest of the two-day event – and specifically my experience. You see, I’ve been told by my mentors ‘Don’t ever be too smart for the room’. What they mean is even when you are one of the experts talking on stage you still need to always be open to learning more. The day you stop learning is the day you die.

I sat with the rest of the crowd for two days listening to Joe Polish share his wisdom and you know what? I was unprepared for all that I learned. In fact, I took 9 pages of notes!! You never really know how much you don’t know until you really listen intently to an expert (even if you are an expert yourself).

So, whether you are speaking at an event or just attending an event always be ready to learn something new or relearn about something you learned long, long ago. You might be surprised at how many areas you can improve & grow, even though you’re already successful.

Marketing Race to the Finish Line

Last weekend I ran the Cleveland Half Marathon with about 19,000 other people in cold rainy conditions.  It took me 2 hours 3 minutes to complete the 13.1 miles which gave me a lot of time to think.

At times I really started to get fatigued so I would look ahead and tell my brain that I just needed to run until the next corner just ahead.  Of course, after that corner I would need to do this again to the next landmark and so on.  These head games went on for a good part of the race.

I started reflecting on how I got to be able to run 13.1 miles in the first place… About a year and a half ago I started running with the goal of running a 3 mile race.  It was really hard to work up to being able to run just one mile.  But then something interesting happened.  I was able to work myself up to running 3 miles in about the same time.  I ran the race about 4 months after starting to run and was thrilled with my accomplishment.

Then, my wife said, “Let’s go run a Half Marathon.”  After getting over the initial shock of this crazy idea I said OK – for some unknown reason.  About 4 months later I had lengthened my training runs so that I was ready for the 13.1 miles of the Half Marathon.  My goal was to finish…and I did in 2 hours 33 minutes.

Then I decided that I kinda liked this running thing so I would do another, which led me to the Cleveland Half Marathon.  So it took me 2 months to run 1mile and another 2 months to run 3 miles and then just 4 months to run 13.1 miles.

So, you might be asking, What does this have to do with Marketing? Actually, quite a bit.  As I was running the race I thought about how hard it was to get started and get up to just one mile.  This is like starting anything new, like this blog.  I’ve thought about starting a blog for some time, but fear of the unknown kept me from just doing it.

Once I got started with my running it was truly amazing how quickly I was able to ramp up to 3 miles, then 13.1 miles.  The same is true with your marketing.  You just need to get started.  Maybe you are unsure how exactly to use Social Media in your marketing or you don’t think that Outrageous Marketing will work in your business.  You need to seek out help from experts and just do it.  Try new techniques, you might be surprised at the results.

But…If you don’t get started you will never be able to finish the race.  So do something new for your Marketing TODAY and YOU will be closer to the Finish Line!!!
